Spirits are high in Washington, D.C. — well, at least from a women’s soccer perspective, they are. The Washington Spirit continued their hot start in the fourth season of the NWSL, as they defeated the Western New York Flash 3-0 Friday. Through three weeks, the undefeated squad has done everything necessary to be at the top of the NWSL standings.
So far, Washington has scored the most goals (six) and allowed the least amount of goals (one) this season. Diana Matheson is leading the way with three goals while Crystal Dunn has notched three assists. Matheson, 32, is playing a very efficient game, as she’s yielded those three goals off only five shots. In the first three matches, the Spirit have recorded 35 shots.
As for the defense, the Spirit have had relatively clean performances. Washington has only two yellow-card bookings in three matches, which is tied with three other teams (the Houston Dash, Chicago Red Stars and Sky Blue FC). Only Western New York and FC Kansas City have recorded fewer (one). Additionally, the Spirit have had a very disruptive defense, allowing only eight shots on goal in the early three-game span. The next-lowest amount is the Seattle Reign allowing 10, while the highest is a tie between the Orlando Pride and the Boston Breakers with 17.
Washington will host Portland on Saturday at 7 p.m.
Broken down in Boston
While the rest of the league has collected at least one point, Boston still remains in a bit of a rut. So far, they’ve lost matches to the Portland Thorns (1-0), to Seattle (3-0) and Washington (1-0). In each match, they failed to net any goals.
Three scoreless games could be attributed to the Breakers’ lack of chances. So far, Boston has only generated nine shots on goal, the lowest among the 10 NWSL teams. Kansas City has the next-lowest amount with 12.
Boston will host Chicago Saturday at 7 p.m.
