A week after being announced as the Orlando Pride’s newest signing, Brazilian star Marta will not play in the team’s season opener against the Portland Thorns on Saturday at Providence Park.
Pride coach Tom Sermanni confirmed with reporters during the club’s media day on Thursday. Marta is, however, expected to suit up for the Pride’s home-opener on Saturday, April 22 against the Washington Spirit.
“She will be here for the home opener, and she will be playing, it’s as simple as that,” said Sermanni. “She just finished playing a Champions League game a couple weeks ago. She just spent 10 days in camp with the Brazilian team and playing an international match. There will be no doubt, come a week on Saturday, she will be on the field wearing an [Orlando Pride] shirt.”
Orlando City CEO Alex Leitão told reporters moments earlier Marta is still resolving her Visa, but is expected to join the team ahead of next weekend’s opener in Orlando.
