Match report: Portland Thorns continues dominance over Orlando Pride in 2-1 win

Beach Volleyball: California Golden Bears vs. Oregon Ducks at Pac-12 North Tournament

The Orlando Pride took an early lead, but goals from Lindsey Horan and Christine Sinclair ensured the Portland Thorns not only their first win of the season, but also a 2-1 victory over the Pride on Sunday at Providence Park.

The Pride took the lead in the 20th minute when Christine Nairn was able to steal a ball from the Thorns’ defensive third, finding Chioma Ubogagu at the center of the box to strike the ball past Adrianna Franch.

The Thorns tied the game in the 28th minute when a long-distance strike from Horan hit the top-right corner of the net for the equalizer. Sinclair scored the go-ahead goal in the 39th minute after tapping-in a cross from Horan past Pride goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris.

Orlando (0-2-1, 1 point) were missing several key players heading into Portland. Brazilian trio Marta, Monica and Poliana are still with their national team. Australians Alanna Kennedy and Emily van Egmond are also with their respective national team.

Despite an early goal, the Pride struggled for most of the match on the offensive third, getting outshot by the Thorns 16-10. Orlando were only able to produce one shot on goal for 90 minutes.

But going up against Portland was never an easy task. The Pride are now 0-5-1 against the Thorns since entering the league in 2016.

Harris finished with the game with six saves.
